Kevin Kline-Henry Harrison is impoverished self-styled aristocrat that tries to live the high life as an escort to wealthy old ladies this is how he describes himself; I have wit, intelligence and joie de vivre. He is very judging and becomes upset at the slightest things. His views are as he says “slight to the right of the pope”.
What I thought of his performance: I love Kevin and had heard he was great in this roll and I liked him in this but was disappointed in his performance. I just felt he was not up to his accurate comedic timing.
Paul Dano-Louis Ives seems to me as an unaware and almost child like prep school English teacher who recently was let go from his job moves to New York sees an add to share an apartment. He ends up moving in and being tutored by the owner of the add/apartment in ways he could never have expected. He reads and fantasizes about what he reads his favorite being “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald. He wanted to try something other than teaching and looked for jobs in the writing area and when he applies for a job at a environmental magazine he gets it. He ends up fantasizing and falling for one of his coworkers( who I think sort of reminds him of the character Daisy in the “Gatsby”).
What I thought of his performance: I have not seen Paul in very many things only Little Miss Sunshine and Gigantic but I liked him in both and thought he was very very good actor and after watching The Extra Man I still feel the same. I believed he was Lois.
John C. Reilly- Gershon a building weirdo with lots of hair and beard. When you finally hear him speak his voice is high. He is a friend of Henry and at first he is mad at Henry which is why do not hear him speak.
What I thought of his performance: I think he could have done more with this especially the voice.
Katie Holmes- Mary works with Lois at a small environmental magazine, she is vegan, beautiful(that is said of her in the movie)is sweet, and in a new relationship.
What I thought of her performance: She is in it more than I thought she would be and all she did I liked. You could tell that her character was a little put off by Lois but she was not over the top about it. There is a surprise with Katie in the movie which I totally liked so I hope some of you will see it soon so I don’t have to hold it in much longer.
Patti D’Arbanville-Katherine is a hooker who’s specialties interest Lois Vivian – Marian Seldes one of Henry’s rich clients
What I thought of her performance I really liked this performance this actress did a great job.
Celia Weston – Lagerfeld (Meridith)- sort of like an extra friend to the same women as Henry is an extra man.
What I thought of her performance: I really like her performance as well.
All in all I liked the movie and think of it as in a true sense an indie movie. Paul and the way he made me like this weird person helps me remember why I go to see indie movies. They are little gems that are not big worlds but glimpses into places you might not see if it weren’t for this movie. You feel, you laugh and after you wonder.

Thank you for the review, that was much appreciated. I’m glad you said that Katie is in it for longer than you initially thought, because I was thinking the same thing , that maybe she would only have a few scenes in it.
The thing is I’m not from the US , so I might not get to see it, if it’s not released here, so now I’m dying to know what the surpise is with Katie. Anyway I’ll wait and see what happens. Thanks again!
Thsnk you SO much FEl.
So appreciate you doing this review for us.
