Katie Holmes and birthday girl Suri Cruise head out into the city to celebrate little Suri’s 6th birthday. While the famous daughter looked picture perfect in her ruffled pink skirt and ballet flats, she looked less than enthusiastic for her close up, hiding her face in her blanket as mom Katie Holmes lead the way.
Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise landed in NYC by helicopter. Suri carried her own luggage off the flight, while Katie got a helping hand from the airport staff. Soon after their arrival, Suri was spotted snacking on an ice cream cone.
It all started with a call from designer Tommy Hilfiger; he wanted Katie Holmes to go to Africa. “Tommy said his own trip to Uganda really had an impact on him,” remembers Holmes, 33. (The Hilfiger Foundation has given $2 million to the nonprofit Millennium Promise for new schools, clinics, and a maternity ward there.) “The more I learned, the more I wanted to go. I just wanted to see for myself what was happening and be a part of helping to create change for people who really need it.” And so on January 24 she found herself bumping along a rutted road toward Ruhiira, in southwestern Uganda, where nearly all villagers live on less than $1 a day and life expectancy is just 53 years.

Katie Holmes is supporting the Tommy Hilfiger Millennium Promise campaign and took a trip to Uganda to see the charity in action. ’As I get older and have different experiences, including motherhood, my eyes are open to the world in a new way,’ she says and added ’Such poverty is shocking. It’s like you’ve gone back 10,000 years’.
