Tom Cruise‘s oldest daughter is joining the family business. While Isabella “Bella” Cruise won’t be lighting up the silver screen anytime soon, she’s recently taken on the role of apprentice at stepmom Katie Holmes‘s fashion label Holmes & Yang. “Kate’s designing and [Bella] is just working her way up,” a beaming Tom Cruise told PEOPLE at the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Museum of Tolerance National Tribute Dinner in Beverly Hills Thursday, where he was joined by Holmes and son Connor. “She’s an artist, Bella, so it’s really great that she gets to work with it,” he added. “She’s loving it.” While her family gathered at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel to support Cruise, who was honored with the Humanitarian Award, 18-year-old Bella was on a flight back from New York City where she’s been learning about the burgeoning Holmes & Yang line. “This is my wife’s company, so you talk about movie sets with me, I can tell you [about] that,” Cruise joked while attempting to explain what exactly his daughter is doing with her step-mom’s brand. “You’ve got to go to all these different factories and verify and make sure you get the correct clothes,” he said. And is the father of three proud of his daughter’s new design aspirations? “I am,” he confirmed. “It’s wonderful!”

Katie Holmes has a laugh with some friends, (including Jeanne Yang who she’s working on a clothing line with called Holmes & Yang) after a long day doing a photo shoot in midtown Manhattan.

Katie Holmes: You travel all over the world – but what articles of clothing should you always bring along, no matter where you’re going?
Jeanne Yang: Well, start with underwear and proper foundation garments. Then you need a cocktail dress. And of course you should pack jeans and a versatile button-down silk shirt.
Also, this isn’t related to clothing, but you should always bring chocolate along when you travel.
KH: I always bring M&Ms.
JY: Along with my boarding pass, my husband always slips a beautiful bar of chocolate into my bags with a lovely note.
KH: That’s so romantic! Let’s say the two of you are heading off for a weekend trip to Paris. What do you bring?
JY: That’s easy. In addition to the basics above, a credit card, lingerie, a trench coat, and heels. And an empty suitcase, to bring back all of the shopping loot.
KH: Speaking of Paris, we’re both inspired by certain iconic style films like Sabrina and Funny Face. What’s another one of your favorite travel films?
JY: Up (2009). By tying thousands of balloons to his home, this old guy sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see South America. Right after lifting off, he finds that he has an unlikely stowaway on the trip. It’s very funny.
KH: And what’s your favorite travel book?
JY: My journal.
KH: If you could travel by an extinct mode of travel, like a chariot or Zeppelin, what would you chose?
JY: Definitely by private rail car. The train would have to have one of those wood-paneled dining cars too.
KH: Okay, let’s talk about time travel. Which era would you visit, and what object of clothing would you bring back with you?
JY: The ’80s, and I’d bring back Reebok Hi Tops.
